Hymn of the Week: The Joyful News

This new hymn combines a celebration of the Christmas message with a prayer for the work of God's mission to all nations. Reflecting on the angels' proclamation to the shepherds that their tidings brought "good news of great joy for all people," the hymn invokes that promise as a prayer for the joy of Christ to indeed touch all nations. I've set it to the tune of the classic Christmas hymn "Once in Royal David's City."

The Joyful News

At Christ's birth, the angels cried out
Tidings of good news for all:
Joy, great joy, for every people
When they hear the Gospel call!

     (Chorus):
     Lord, may all the nations know
     The joyful news of Christ our Lord!

As we celebrate his coming,
King of kings and Prince of Peace,
May his peace surround our world;
May his blessings never cease!

     (Chorus)

Glory be to God forever;
Glory be to God on high!
To all peoples he has granted
Goodwill, peace, and joy, and life!

     (Chorus)
