The Evangeliad (16:1-6)

Section 16:1-6 (corresponding to Matt. 12:38-42; Luke 11:29-32)

Then some of the scribes and the Pharisees,
Hoping to test him, said, "We want to see,
O Teacher, a sign." And Jesus replied:
"A wicked generation looks for a sign!"

Well, it will receive no sign except this:
The sign of old Jonah inside the fish!
As he dwelt there for three days and three nights,
So in the earth shall the Son of Man lie.

And then, after having come forth again,
Jonah was a sign to Nineveh's men--
Just so will the Son of Man be a sign
To this generation, evil and blind!

When this generation, on Judgment Day,
Stands at the throne of justice and grace,
Nineveh's people will stand against them,
And with unified voices, they will condemn;

For they repented when Jonah came near,
But now one greater than Jonah is here.
And in judgment will rise the Queen of the south,
To condemn you with the words of her mouth,

For she traveled from the ends of the earth,
Undertaking with joy a difficult search,
For Solomon's wisdom she longed to hear,
Yet now someone greater than he is here!
